Code Vein – Review

Code Vein is the latest game in the SoulsBorne genre, and is made by the team behind the God Hand games. The twist here is that you are a Revenant, a vampire of sorts, and have a companion alongside you at all times. All the usual Souls-like hooks are present – there are bonfires you rest at, the combat is slow and deliberate with a stamina meter keeping you in check, there are Estus flask equivalents, and you die in a few hits. The game is tough, and incredibly challenging. Also, it has an anime look going for it – I was not a big fan of the art style, but it’s simply a matter of taste. I did like the hot anime girls in the character creator – again, a matter of taste.

There’s a good variety to the locations, weapons, character builds, boss designs and the enemies. The God Hand pedigree shows in the grotesque and massive boss fights, and they are incredibly fun. What I really liked are the more streamlined multiplayer elements – you can play the full game in co-op, or an AI companion, which makes for some fun co-ordination and strategy. The story is a bit weak, but the gameplay more than makes up for it.

Pros:

  • Flashy and challenging combat
  • Great co-op
  • Good boss fights
  • Anime aesthetics

Cons:

  • Some unfair difficulty spikes
  • Anime story

Score – 8/10
