Google to Provide $5 million to encourage innovation in digital journalism

google_logoMountain View, Calif. — Hoping to encourage innovation at the grassroots level, Mountain View-based Google said it will provide $5 million in grants to non-profits “working to develop new approaches to journalism in the digital age.” The company said it will give $2 million to the Florida-based Knight Foundation, which has a history of supporting electronic journalism projects, with the remaining $3 million funding similar projects in other countries. “We look forward to working with the journalism community to help digital news move forward,” wrote Nikesh Arora, the president of Google’s global sales operations and business development unit, in the company’s blog.
